Cup Overflow

A silver plated cup overflowing with green grapes and purple plums, and a slice of robust red for luck.

The cup, incidentally, is a trophy with the inscription “Arubaanse Parenkampioenschappen 1972”, a Bridge championship for couples on Aruba in the Caribbean.

This is another painting where I set up the composition in my studio, simply loosely sketching it onto a wooden board, and then applying the colours with informal brush strokes. Because I do not make photographs to consult for these paintings, I have to finish the work within a week or so, before the fruit changes in shape and colour.

Recently I applied a colour wash over the entire surface of the painting to tone down the contrast.
